IRS REQUIREMENTS
What the IRS Requires When You Donate More Than $5,000 in Crypto
A Qualified Appraisal
Crypto is not treated like publicly traded stock, so an exchange price alone does not substantiate a deduction above $5,000.
Form 8283, Section B
The gift is reported in Section B, which both the appraiser and the charity sign.
A 60-Day Signing Window
The appraisal can be signed no earlier than 60 days before the date of the gift.
In Hand by Your Filing Date
You must receive the appraisal by the due date of the return claiming the deduction, including extensions.
Attached Above $500,000
For a deduction above $500,000, the appraisal itself is attached to your return.
Similar Gifts Counted Together
The $5,000 threshold counts similar items given during the year, even when they go to several charities.
WHY THE APPRAISAL MATTERS
Our Qualified Appraisals Document Crypto Donations the Way the IRS Requires
In Chief Counsel Advice 202302012, the IRS reviewed a taxpayer who donated cryptocurrency, claimed a deduction above $5,000, and relied on an exchange price instead of a qualified appraisal. The memo concluded that cryptocurrency does not fit the exception for readily valued property such as publicly traded securities, so the qualified appraisal requirement applied and the taxpayer was not entitled to the deduction.
That makes the appraisal part of the deduction itself, not a formality. Our donation reports state the fair market value of the donated tokens on the date of the gift, identify the markets and price data relied on, and include what the Form 8283 instructions call for, from a description of the property to the appraiser's qualifications.
We prepare the report and complete the appraiser's declaration. You and your tax advisor decide how it is used on your return.

FAQ
Crypto Donation Appraisal Questions
Do I need a qualified appraisal to donate crypto?
If you claim a deduction of more than $5,000 for donated cryptocurrency, yes. The IRS position in CCA 202302012 is that crypto does not qualify for the exception for publicly traded securities, so a qualified appraisal and Section B of Form 8283 are required. Similar items given during the year count together toward the $5,000 threshold.
When should the appraisal be done?
A qualified appraisal can be signed no earlier than 60 days before the gift and must be in your hands by the due date of your return, including extensions. Many donors order it right after the transfer, once the transaction record shows the exact date and units. If you have a filing deadline, tell us and we confirm up front whether we can meet it.
Can the charity value the crypto for me?
No. The charity signs Section B of Form 8283 to acknowledge the gift, but the donee cannot serve as your qualified appraiser. The value has to come from a qualified appraiser who is independent of the gift.
What records do you need for a crypto donation appraisal?
The record of the transfer to the charity (an exchange confirmation or the blockchain transaction ID), the token and quantity, the date of the gift, and the charity's written acknowledgment if you have it. For a planned gift, tell us the expected date and we can scope the work in advance.
Will the IRS accept the appraised value?
Acceptance is the IRS's decision, not ours. What we control is the report: prepared in accordance with USPAP, written to the content rules for a qualified appraisal, and with every price source and method disclosed so the value can be checked.
